Chemical Safety Awareness

Course Background:

This course is essential for people who have the potential to be exposed to chemicals in the workplace. Participants will gain a better understanding of the chemicals they deal with and how they might affect them during their work or in the event of an accident.

Course Content:

  • The definition of a hazardous substance
  • Examples of hazardous substances in the workplace
  • Routes of entry into the body for hazardous substances
  • The 2007 Code of Practice for the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Chemical Agents) Regulations 2001
  • Risk assessment principles and practice hazard identification

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course participants will:

  • Understand the diverse forms of chemical substances and the risks each presents
  • Have appropriate knowledge of hazards and dangers of working with chemicals
  • Be able to understand the information contained in material safety data sheets
  • Obtain competent knowledge of the legislation controlling the storage, use and transport of chemicals
  • Understand hazard signs and how to use the information they contain
  • Be able to take appropriate safety precautions when working with some typical chemical substances (including wearing of required PPE)

People who have the potential to be exposed to chemicals in the workplace

Training Methodology:

This course is classroom based, it is highly interactive with role-playing and practical exercises to reinforce understanding and learning.

What to Bring to the Course:

While pens and paper will be supplied, participants are free to bring their own. All other equipment will be supplied.

Duration of the Course:

1 day


A maximum of 12 per course


Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive a certificate in chemical safety awareness.
